Story: Biometrics don't lie. Part 29.

Part 29. The haircut.

The sound of my shackles had become a rhythmic part of my existence - a metallic, counting beat that announced my arrival long before I entered a room. But as I was led into the academy's salon, the sharp clink-shush of the iron chain against the polished marble floor felt jarringly out of place. The coldness of the stone seeped upward through the soles of my bare feet, a biting reminder of my vulnerability in this temple of luxury. This was a sanctuary of scent and symmetry, smelling of expensive Moroccan oils and high-end pomades, where the daughters of the elite came to have their identities polished to a mirror sheen.

I felt like a smudge of grease on a silk canvas.

Walking beside me was Olivia, a student from the Leadership Development class. Miss Jones, the impostor, was occupied with her private equestrian lesson at the academy's stables, so she had tasked her friend with taking care of me for the time being. Olivia looked every bit the part of Elmwood's future ruling class: her posture was effortless and poised, dressed in an impeccable schoolgirl uniform consisting of a crisp silk blouse, a tailored blazer that hugged her shoulders perfectly, and a pleated tartan skirt that swayed with a rhythmic, aristocratic grace. The contrast between us was absolute - she was the picture of polished privilege, while I was a shackled object in midnight silk and lace.

The hairdresser, a woman named Madame Claire with eyes that had seen three decades of aristocratic vanity, stopped mid-motion. She looked at my black silk maid uniform, her gaze lingering on the heavy leather collar and the brass tag that screamed 'DELINQUENT' from my throat, before glancing down at my bare toes curled against the marble.

Before a word was spoken, I caught Madame Claire's eye, dropped my chin submissively to my chest, and sank into a low, disciplined curtsey. The short chain between my ankle cuffs clicked sharply against the floor as I lowered myself, holding the position until Olivia gestured for me to rise.
